FAQ
Why do some configuration names still say NestPics?
The app branding is Trellilume, but older server releases use NESTPICS_*
configuration keys. Unreleased repository work is preparing TRELLILUME_* keys
and temporary compatibility. Follow the files for your installed release; do not
rename live keys or change secret values and storage paths as a search-and-replace
step. See the migration warning in the Startup Guide.
Preparation tools can check private copies, but do not perform the migration. Wait for the matching image, tested recovery procedure, and deployment steps.
Do I need a cloud account?
No. Trellilume is self-hosted. You run the server yourself and connect the apps to it. A hosted option may be offered later, but it is optional.
Can I access my library from the web?
Yes. The Flutter web client connects to your server just like the mobile apps.
Why did my verification email not arrive?
Email verification depends on the selected server's policy. If it is required,
the Trellilume server must be configured with an SMTP provider. Check the
NESTPICS_SMTP_HOST, sender address, port, security mode, and credentials in
your server .env, then retry from the verification screen. Trellilume reports a
delivery error when SMTP is missing or rejects the message instead of claiming
that an email was sent.
How do I access Trellilume outside my home network?
Expose your server with a public URL (domain + reverse proxy) or a tunnel, then use that URL in the app settings. See the Remote Access guide for step-by-step instructions.
What hardware do I need?
Any always-on machine or NAS with enough storage for your library will work. Start small and scale up as your collection grows.
Does Trellilume impose storage or account quotas?
Not by default on an ordinary self-hosted server. The Server Owner controls the per-account, server logical-storage, and account-count product quotas, and may leave them Unlimited. Finite upload and low-disk safeguards remain active to protect the host. See Storage Policies & Limits for the difference between product quotas, operational safeguards, Observe, and Enforce.
Will Trellilume modify my originals?
No. Trellilume indexes your photos and keeps the originals where you store them.
How do I keep backups?
Use your preferred backup strategy (external drives, NAS replication, or cloud backup) and keep your originals safe. Trellilume works with local-first storage models.
What is the difference between an AI provider and an MCP agent?
An AI provider supplies the model used by Trellilume's built-in Assistant. Ollama, LM Studio, and OpenAI are provider choices. MCP Agent Access is a separate connection that lets an external, MCP-compatible client use only the Trellilume tools and data allowed by a scoped Agent Grant. See AI Assistant and MCP Agent Setup for both workflows.
Why can Trellilume not reach Ollama or LM Studio at localhost?
The Trellilume backend, not your phone, contacts the provider. If the backend
runs in Docker Desktop, localhost points inside the container. Use
http://host.docker.internal:11434/v1 for Ollama or
http://host.docker.internal:1234/v1 for LM Studio when the provider runs on
the Docker host. A provider on another computer needs a reachable private IP
address and local-network serving enabled.
Does my ChatGPT subscription include OpenAI API use?
No. ChatGPT and the OpenAI API have separate billing. To use OpenAI with the Trellilume Assistant, configure API billing and create an API project key, then save that key through Settings > Server > AI Providers.
Is it safe to expose the Trellilume MCP endpoint to the internet?
Do not broadly expose it by default. Keep MCP on localhost, a trusted private network, or a private VPN when possible. Use HTTPS, narrow scopes, short grant expirations, and one grant per client. Broad remote access requires an OAuth resource-server deployment and target-specific security testing.
